Auszüge aus einer Predigt von Martin Luther [1]

___________________________

Sermon - February 29th, 2020
Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Regina, SK
Text: Matthew 4:1-11
Theme: The Temptations of Christ – Invocavit

Excerpts from a Sermon by Martin Luther

___________________________

Intr - “In this gospel you hear the Lord Jesus was tempted in three ways following his baptism after being in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights and eating nothing; (...) But now this is a wide-reaching gospel, especially if you want to draw it to all of Christianity, which is also tempted by hunger and persecution, by heresy, and finally with the kingdom of the world, as whoever respects history proves. But this time we don't want to think about it as much, but stick to the simple teaching (...)

All Christians are in such danger. Because that can be calculated quickly, because he did not spare the Lord Christ himself, but instead sat down so excellently against him, he will spare much less because he knows that we are much weaker and not so well equipped. That is why we should be prepared for such a danger, and learn from the Lord Jesus Christ how we should also deal with such enemies since he has to let go of us. But this happens only through belief in God and his word. Those who have such armor and use it correctly are well protected from the devil. (...)

Now we want to look at the challenges one after the other. The first is that the devil speaks to the Lord Jesus Christ, seeing that he is starving: "If you are the Son of God, say that these stones become bread." (...) The Lord answers him: “Hello, devil, not like that; "Man does not live solely on bread, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." So that the devil's input is this, he should think of the bread alone, and pay no heed to God's Word when he has bread.

Such challenges are still going on today that the devil puts such thoughts in people's hearts: If you are God's son, God cannot be angry with you either. Therefore, now confidently gather and be stingy, do as the world does, you can’t harm anything, you cannot sin (...).

The other temptation is that the devil leads the Lord Jesus to the holy city of Jerusalem and places him on top of the temple, saying, He should let himself fall down, he would not suffer because he was the Son of God; therefore all the angels would rather have to wait for him so he won’t hit a stone.

This is a difficult and spiritual challenge to faith, since faith is also challenged on the other hand, just as it is challenged above with the sin and wrath of God. Because where the devil cannot get us to despair of God, he tries on the other hand whether he can measure us and make us hopeful and bold. As if the devil wanted to say: Do you want to argue with me from God's Word? Wait, I can too. There you have God's word: "He will command his angels over you, they must build you a staircase and shall carry you on their hands." Now jump down, let's see if you believe God's promise too. (...)

It is also a necessary and useful teaching, that it is trying God where someone resigns from the order and wants to start something new and special without God's Word. As monks and nuns do, they drive on their own devotion, take on a special life; say afterwards, Christ commanded it, saying, "Leave everything and follow me." This is not only reason, but also writing. But here you see that the devil can also use scripture to defraud people. But there is a shortcoming that he does not keep the whole scripture, but only takes as muchas is useful to his cause; what does not serve him, he leaves out and remains silent. (...)

The third challenge is now the grossest that the devil, through teaching and violence, subordinates us, again with God's Word, to bring us into idolatry. To this it helps a lot that the external holiness has such a great appearance before reason, and seems far more beautiful, than all obedience to the word of God. (...)

But whoever wants to serve God should do what God has commanded in his word. If you are a child, honor your father and mother. If you are a maid or a servant, be obedient and loyal. If you are master or madam, do not annoy your servants with words or with works; but do what is right for you, and keep it for fear of God. That means God and His Word, and not serving the person, because there is his word that commands such things and wants to have them. It is now said in front of the world, as you want it to be served to men or women, father or mother, neighbors or children, so it is a right worship service. For God wrote his word on my next head and said: You shall love your neighbor and serve him. (...)

Cc - We have to be prepared for these three challenges because we are alive. That is why we should learn here how we can protect ourselves with God's Word against walking on the middle street; and therefore do not allow us to believe that we have stone and not bread when we are starving, still being measured in faith, or at last to drop from right worship for money for the sake of good; but at the same time remain constant in the faith and fear of God. Our dear Lord Christ, who has overcome this temptation and too well himself, also gives us strength that we can overcome it and be saved through him, Amen.” [1]
