The Roman Pope dies; a new Roman Pope must be selected from among the Cardinals who have convened in Roman for a sequestered voting process called a conclave in this Edward Berger adaptation of Robert Harris' 2016 novel. The film is one third costume drama, one third scheming political thriller, one third subversive ideological/theological takedown.

In this interview Pr. Giese breaks down many aspects of the film including an indepth look at the way the way in which Matthew 27:46 / Mark 15:34 “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?,” which is said by Christ upon the cross quoting Psalm 22, misses the point of that Psalm in the context of Jesus' crucifixion when included in a sermon preached by Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) to his fellow Cardinals as the Dean of the College of Cardinals who oversees the Conclave. Listeners will also hear about a brief yet important visual moment within the film featuring a detail of the Last Judgment (1536–1541) fresco called “the damned alone,” which is part this painting Michelangelo that lines the wall behind the altar in the Sistine Chapel where the conclave is taking place. Also the twist conclution of the film and the subversive nature of that twist is discussed in some detail. Giese also mentions the Lutheran Confessions particularily the "Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope" found in the Book of Concord. To read this document for yourself click here
