June Pop Culture and the Bible, Bible Study: The Good The Bad and The Ugly (1966)

What is: Pop Culture and the Bible, Bible Study?

It's an opportunity for Youth/Young Adults to practice putting their faith to work while looking at pop culture. We generally watch movies and then explore how Scripture intersects with what we've watched. This way of thinking about media can be applied to music, film, literature, television, art, and just about any other form of cultural production. We hope that the people coming to this would become wise consumers of media and be able to apply their Christian faith to whatever they are looking at.

This Month: The Good The Bad and The Ugly (1966), Sergio Leone .

During the American Civil War, three men set off to find $200,000 in buried gold coins. Zuco and Blondie have known each other for some time now having used the reward on Zuco's head as a way of earning money. They come across a dying man, jack Carson, who tells them of a treasure in gold coins. By chance, he tells Zuco the name of the cemetery and tells Blondie the name of the grave where the gold is buried. Now rivals, the two men have good reason to keep each other alive. The third man, Angel Eyes, hears of the gold stash from someone he's been hired to kill. All he knows is to look for for someone named Jack Carson. The three ultimately meet in a showdown that takes place amid a major battle between Confederate and Union forces. Written by  garykmcd

To get you started read Psalm 1 and look at this Sermon. On Friday Night we'll think about Righteousness and Wickedness.

Blessed is the man

who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,

nor stands in the way of sinners,

nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

but his delight is in the law of the LORD,

and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree

planted by streams of water  that yields its fruit in its season,

and its leaf does not wither.

In all that he does, he prospers.  The wicked are not so,

but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,

nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

for the LORD knows the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked will perish. (Psalm 1 ESV)

Also just for fun check this out! Here's the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain playing the theme music from the film The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Enjoy!
